Intermediate Greek Benefits
Even though the NBGE currently only offers one form of the national exam that covers the basics, nevertheless it is a great tool for your intermediate class.
1) It is a great kick-start to a second year course after summer vacation.
Students often have difficulty getting back into Greek after a summer break. The NBGE can help prepare your students to make the most of your intermediate course right from the first week. Simply let it be known that it is required for students to take the NBGE in the first week of classes and it is highly recommended that they take it a few times before school begins so they can submit their best score. The NBGE will hold students accountable for reviewing the basics and the instructor will have more time to teach intermediate material.
2) It motivates students review the basics outside of class so the instructor can invest valuable class time on intermediate material.
2) It is a readymade placement or entrance exam.
Instead of spending time writing and grading a placement exam for someone who may only be flirting with the idea of entering your intermediate course, why not simply have them take the NBGE and send you their results? The NBGE can quickly and easily give you an idea if the student is serious. This works especially well when incorporated with the recommendation in #1 above. Simply have everyone (continuing and new students) take the NBGE at the beginning of the course. Not only will it help you place students correctly, but it will catch problems early giving the instructor time to address them before they become major issues.
